Jules Buyssens (1872-1958) is een belangrijke figuur in de wereld van het tuin- en landschapsontwerp in België. Na een opleiding van een vijftiental jaren in binnen- en buitenland, die hij afsloot als bureauchef bij Édouard André in Parijs, crëerde hij meer dan duizend ontwerpen in België en in een tiental andere Europese landen (Frankrijk, Rusland, Zwitserland, Nederland, Monaco, Polen, Litouwen). Hij legde parken en tuinen aan voor de internationale aristocratie en rijke bourgeoisie (prins en prinses Napoléon te Ronchinne, de familie Solvay in Terhulpen en Brussel, Béatrice Ephrussi de Rothschild in Monte-Carlo, gravin de Pourtalès in Zwitserland…), werkte in opdracht van verscheidene gemeentebesturen en bedacht tijdens het interbellum charmante stadstuintjes, die het pittoreske verenigden met de art-decostijl. Behalve initiatiefnemer van de beweging en het tijdschrift Le Nouveau Jardin Pittoresque was hij tevens ook de landschapsarchitect van de stad Brussel (1904-1937) en de verantwoordelijke voor het landschapsontwerp van de Wereldexpo op de Heizel in 1935.

Le ville di Roma, capolavori come Villa Borghese, Villa Doria Pamphilj, Villa Madama, Villa Giulia, la Farnesina,... sono parte integrante dell'immagine della città, anch'esse meta in tutte le epoche di visite ammirate, fonte di ispirazione per innumerevoli dipinti, oggetto di imitazione e spesso scenario di ambientazioni letterarie. Gli studi sulla loro storia sono stati molteplici, ma hanno riguardato, in particolar modo, i periodi di maggior splendore quali il Rinascimento e il Barocco. Si tratta di studi oramai datati, superati negli ultimi decenni da un fiorire di ricerche talvolta parziali, ma comunque utili per una conoscenza più approfondita di questo importante patrimonio di arte e natura. Altro limite degli studi, anche recenti, finora condotti sui giardini romani è costituito dalla scarsa attenzione per periodi storici considerati di minore interesse, quali il Medioevo, di fatto ignorato, o la fine dell'Ottocento e la prima metà del Novecento. Questo volume si propone di affrontare l'argomento da un punto di vista innovativo, con un triplice obiettivo: rileggere la storia del giardino a Roma dal Medioevo al Novecento, arricchendola del portato delle nuove ricerche sviluppate negli ultimi anni; mettere in luce la specificità di ogni periodo storico, presentare le interrelazioni tra i vari complessi delineando la linea di sviluppo delle ville e dei giardini romani in connessione con la peculiarità della città.
